Basic Essentials.

By

Fred Harston

Most problems that Koi keepers encounter are due to poor water quality. During my conversations with Koi keepers over the telephone or at the pond side I usually hear about the present direct problems their Koi are visibly suffering and some fish by this time are virtually falling apart. However after intensive questions are directed at the Koi keeper one in particular usually triggers off a previous lapse of memory and suddenly things start to fall into place.

At Wednesdays AGM, it was voted unanimously to go ahead with the event.
The venue is Bretby conference centre, situated just on the outskirts of Burton on Trent.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE

BY

FRED HARSTON

Foreword

This article will especially suit newcomers to the hobby, although experienced keepers may also find it interesting and pick things up they are not already aware of. There is so much more could be said on each subject mentioned as this article merely scratches the surface but it is hoped the main points have been covered.

One of the most difficult situations a Koi keeper will experience is when he or she is confronted with a sudden problem.

The first thing we ask ourselves is, “Where do we go from here? “ In other words where do we start to diagnose the problem, a very trying time for the Koi keeper. Especially for people who are new to the hobby.

The problem may have been in stages of development over the previous days, weeks or even months. The first thing is not to panic and reach for the first chemical that comes to hand, using remedies for parasites, bacteria or fungus. What we should do is start to use the process of elimination. Bearing in mind the previous history of our actions whether it be days, weeks or months ago.
