Most problems that Koi keepers encounter are due to poor water quality. During my conversations with Koi keepers over the telephone or at the pond side I usually hear about the present direct problems their Koi are visibly suffering and some fish by this time are virtually falling apart. However after intensive questions are directed at the Koi keeper one in particular usually triggers off a previous lapse of memory and suddenly things start to fall into

Foreword
This article will especially suit newcomers to the hobby, although experienced keepers may also find it interesting and pick things up they are not already aware of. There is so much more could be said on each subject mentioned as this article merely scratches the surface but it is hoped the main points have been covered.

A brief insight into our Koi’s defense systems that nature provided for them to combat their often hostile environment in the wild. But of course it is a different lifestyle for our pampered pals. Where maybe some of these senses may not be practiced or required on the same scale.

I use the word sense not as in common sense but as a detectable sense. It is often the topic of conversation between Koi Keepers as to whether or not Koi can

PREVENTION MEASURES LONG AND SHORT TERM: By FRED HARSTON

I am sure the old saying of prevention is better than cure is a very valid statement.
There are numerous prevention measures a Koi keeper can adhere to all way through the hobby from end to end.
There is only one place to start and that is at the beginning.

By the beginning I mean long term prevention measures.
From the very first glint in the eye of the potential Koi keeper prevention must be a very decisive factor.

Our Summer BBQ was planned for the 15th of July, the height of summer. Of course we anticipated a hot and sunny day for our venture. We would all have to take care not to get sunburned. We needn’t have worried had we?! Torrential rain.. A severe weather warning issued by the MET office. I suppose we could have frozen the burgers, phoned around and cancelled our plans, but no, we donned our kagoules and brollies and set out on our pond visit day.
